Reality TV, Real-Life Law: Introducing Melissa’s Blog Series on The Valley and Family Law in Saskatchewan

Crossover episode!

By Melissa Steele; family lawyer, dog mom and reality TV lover

If you’ve been watching The Valley—Bravo’s newest reality spin-off—you know it’s more than just cocktails and confessionals. Behind the glam and gossip, there are real-life issues playing out on screen: co-parenting struggles, relationship breakdowns, custody conflicts, blended families, and more. These are the kinds of issues that many people in Saskatchewan (and across Canada) face every day—and as a family lawyer, I see the real-life versions of these situations all the time.

That’s why I’m launching a new weekly blog series where I’ll break down what’s happening on The Valley from a family law perspective. Each week, I’ll share thoughts on what the show gets right (and wrong), and what everyday people can take away from the drama. Whether it’s a tense exchange about parenting time, a heated argument about finances, or subtle dynamics that reveal how power and control show up in relationships, I’ll be unpacking it all—with a legal lens rooted in Saskatchewan law and broader Canadian principles.

My goal? To make family law more accessible and relatable, to highlight important takeaways, and to show that behind the Bravo drama are legal themes that matter deeply in real life. Think of it as legal commentary meets pop culture.

Stay tuned for the first instalment this week—and if you’re watching the show too, I’d love to hear what stands out to you.
