A Path to Reconciliation: Nicolette Merasty’s Guide for Cultural Competency in Law

Nicolette rolls

It has been Nicolette week at our office! Nicolette Merasty, our newest lawyer, signed the rolls in Regina last Friday, signifying her professional transition form articling student to lawyer. We could not be more proud of Nicolette for her perseverance and dedication in absolutely crushing her CPLED course and are so excited to see her through this next chapter of her career.

Born and raised in northern Saskatchewan, Nicolette is a member of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, with her home community being Pelican Narrows. She graduated from the U of S, College of Law in 2021 and during her studies, she served as President of the National Indigenous Law Students’ Association.

On top of her graduation to lawyering, Nicolette has also just completed a major project that we are thrilled to share with her permission; a Cultural Competency Guide. At our office, each of our staff members take on a 90-day project we call “rocks” every quarter. Nicolette was inspired to develop this guide to help our team start or deepen their own reconciliation processes.

“I believe that reconciliation begins with an individual’s personal journey and the TRC Calls to Action are essential to the reconciliation process.”

We are deeply grateful to Nicolette for dedicating her time and effort to creating this invaluable document to educate our team and others . Rooted in the Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action #27, Nicolette’s comprehensive guide covers the history and legacy of Residential Schools, the United Nations Declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 & 10, Aboriginal Rights and Indigenous Laws and a framework for creating your own ReconciliACTION Plan.

We call upon the Federation of Law Societies of Canada to ensure that lawyers receive appropriate cultural competency training, which includes the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal– Crown relations. This will require skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism.

We are eager to implement this Guide in our professional and personal lives and are sharing it to call upon our peers in the legal community and other offices to do the same.  Nicolette’s work is a powerful tool for our collective responsibility towards meaningful reconciliation.

We have included a downloadable version of Nicolette’s guide below.
